Fern - Lady 'Lady In Red' - 2 Gal.

$22.99

Athyrium filix-femina 'Lady in Red'

This impressive shade lover is one of the most tolerant ferns you can grow while providing a subtle injection of color into an area that may need a little shaking up at times! Lacy, deep green fronds are held aloft by vibrant burgundy stems to create a bi-color fountain effect in the landscape that is outstanding and loaded with texture. 'Lady in Red' forms a sizeable clump as it matures and provides excellent cover to a number of native songbirds while providing nesting material from dried fronds. Plant it in groups in moist soils for best performance but 'Lady in Red' is one of the most tolerant ferns of slightly drier soils, too!

Interesting Notes

From a volunteer at The New England Wildflower Society comes a hot new selection of our native lady fern (Athyrium filix-feminavar. angustum forma rubellum) that's all the rage. The lacy light green foliage is held upright on dark brilliant red-violet stipes (fern stems). Each plant of this slowly spreading fern should spread to 3' in 5 years. This deciduous easy-to-grow fern makes a great blending plant for hosta and other bold-leaf plants in the woodland garden. Matteuccia, named in honor of C. Matteucci (1800-1868), an Italian physicist. struthiopteris, from the Greek, strouqeios (stroutheios), "of an ostrich", and pteris (pteris), "fern" Common Name, from the resemblance of the fronds to the plumes of the large flightless bird of Africa. Fiddleheads (young coiled sterile fronds) are considered a delicacy.

Growing Tips

Lady fern flourishes in bright shade and moist, rich, organic soil. Does not tolerate clay. Tolerates sun if kept cool and moist. The color on this deciduous form improves with age and does not fully display its beauty until it has been through a cold winter. High nutrient fertilizer intensifies the color but takes away from its luminescence. This is an easily-grown 2 to 3 foot cold hardy fern, and is suitable for Zones 3–8 where it is happy in light shade.

Sun Exposure: Full Shade, Partial Shade
